Aceh Museum was founded during the reign of the Dutch East Indies, which was inaugurated by the use Civilian and Military Governor of Aceh General HNA Swart on July 31, 1915. At that time the building in the form of a building Traditional House of Aceh (Aceh Rumoh). The building comes from Aceh pavilion placed in the arena Colonial Exhibition (De Koloniale Tentoonsteling) in Hyderabad on August 13 - 15 November 1914.

Traditional house of Nangroe Aceh Darussalam also called "Rumoh Aceh"  a stage house has a height varying according to the architecture of the manufacturer. But the habit of having a height of about 2.5-3 meters above the ground. To enter it had to climb some stairs. Consists of three or five rooms in it, to the main hall is often referred to as vines.

Rumoh Aceh not only shelter, but an expression of faith in God and adaptation to nature. Adaptation to the environment can be seen from the rumoh Aceh shaped stage, pedestal pole made of solid wood, the walls of the board, and the roof of thatch. Utilization of nature can also be seen when trying to incorporate parts of the house that do not use nails but using pegs or straps of rattan. Although only made of wood, thatch-roofed leaves, and do not use nails, rumoh Aceh can last up to 200 years.

In rumoh Aceh, there are some decorative motifs were used, namely:
  1. Religious motif carvings which are taken from the verses of the Quran;
  2. The floral motif used is stelirisasi plants as leaves, roots, stems, or flowers. The carvings of these herbs are not color-coded, and if they are, the colors used are red and black. This ornament is usually found in rinyeuen (ladder), walls, tulak angen, kindang, beams on the hood, and the windows of the house;
  3. Fauna motifs are usually used are animals that are often seen and liked; Natural motifs used by the people of Aceh among which are: the sky and clouds, the sky and the moon, and the stars and the sea; and other motifs, such as rantee, tongue, and so forth.

CAKRA DONYA BELLS

This bell is very famous in the region of Aceh. History records that the bells cakradonya a gift of Admiral Cheng Ho, a leader of the Chinese fleet sent by the Emperor of China to the Sultanate of Samudera Pasai in 1405. The provision of this bell in order to bind the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two kingdoms in different countries. This bell-sized 11/2 m and a width of 1 m. In about the year 1524 AD Sultanate of Pasai conquered by the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam and the bell finally transported to Banda Aceh [1]. Cakradonya name is the name of a war fleet of Sultan Iskandar Muda, which means the news while donya chakra means the world. Cakradonya bell serves as a medium to convey the news to the world, including war cues during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda. At the top of the bell are writing Chinese characters and Arabic. Chinese characters are written is "Sing Fang intention Toeng Juut Kat Yat Tjo", but writing the script has not readable anymore because it is age. Initially giant bell which is one of the historical heritage of high quality is placed near Baiturrahman Grand Mosque complex is located in the Palace of the Sultan. But now Cakradonya bell was moved to the Museum of Aceh and placed in a dome in the courtyard of the museum since 1915. Until now, the giant bell is a symbol or special icon Aceh City.

Among the collection of the museum is quite popular is a bell that has reached the age of 1400 years. This bell is named 'Bell Chakra Donya' which merupakkan gift from the Chinese Emperor of the Ming Dynasty to the Sultan Pasai on the 15th Century, which is awarded when a goodwill trip Admiral Muhammad Cheng Ho. This bell was brought to Aceh when Sultan Ali Shah of the Sultanate of Aceh Mughayat Pasai conquered in 1524 AD
